Key facts

The commonest hedgerow rose, with scented pink or white flowers in clusters of up to three

Field rose is similar but its flowers are always white and it rarely grows above 1m tall

Scarlet hips develop in autumn, used to make preserves and eaten by birds and small mammals such as voles

Extras

Arching branches with dark green leaves and hooked thorns spread widely

'Robin's pincushions' are caused by gall wasps, whose young develop within the plant and emerge in spring
